Data Requirements
To set up and run WAM both GIS spatial datasets and tabular data are required. The GIS data is imported to the WAM scenario when the GIS database is constructed, or by using the Import GIS Data Tool. Tabular data is entered or imported to the database through the use of the Feature Property Editor.
Certain datasets are essential to set up the model, while others are optional depending on the simulation objective. Below is a listing of the required and optional data needed to set up and run WAM.
| Dataset | Data Type | Brief Description |
|---|---|---|
| Drainage sub-Basins | GIS - Polygon Feature Class | Sub-basins are used to control and direct runoff before it enters the reach network. It is used in the creation of overland flow distance grid creation, in that runoff originating on source cells will not cross sub-basin lines and will be forced to flow into a reach contained within the same sub-basin. This dataset is also used to create an overall basin feature dataset by dissolving the subbasin polygons. This basin dataset defines the spatial extent of the modeling and is also used for the default Irrigation Source and Wastewater Utility Zone feature classes. |
| Land Use | GIS - Polygon Feature Class | A polygon feature class that maps out distinct areas of specific land use or land cover types. The land use must be parameterized to represent the management activities (e.g. fertilizer rates or existing detention ponds) for a realistic simulation. The land use parameterization is extensive and includes processes that will influence the water balance and nutrient load. The parameter data is contained in a separate database with the appropriate tables joined to the GIS feature class. For a full listing of the parameter types and a description of each, review the User Manual. For common land uses, WAM has a number of default land use types, and recommended BMPs that have been predefined to represent these. A user can match their data to these or define their own. The attribute field FLUCCS is used to match the Land Use feature class to the WAM default types. |
| Soil | GIS - Polygon Feature Class | A polygon feature class that maps out distinct areas of specific soil types. The soil types must be parameterized to represent the physical characteristics of each soil. The soil parameterization is extensive and includes processes that will influence the water balance and nutrient load. As with the land use data, the soils parameter data is contained in a separate database with the appropriate tables joined to the GIS feature class. For a full listing of the parameter types and a description of each, review the User Manual. All soil types within the State of Florida have already been characterized. Many of those soils are similar to soils in other locations. The attribute field COMPNAME is used to match the soils feature class to the WAM default types. |
| Irrigation Sources | GIS - Polygon Feature Class | If an irrigation source is known, WAM can be setup to withdraw irrigation water from that specific feature, otherwise the default is to use deep groundwater as the irrigation supply. |
| Wastewater Utility Zones | GIS - Polygon Feature Class | If an area is serviced by a wastewater treatment facility, that area will not produce a waste load directly to the reach network. |
| Rainfall Stations | GIS - Point Feature Class | A point feature class that represents the rainfall monitoring locations. A specific tool on the WAM Toolbar is used to enter the location into a scenario which can then be associated with daily monitoring records. |
| Rainfall Amount | CSV - Daily Monitoring Records | Daily records of observed rainfall in centimeters. This data is loaded through the Feature Property Editor. |
| Reaches | GIS - Polyline Feature Class | Line feature class that represents the hydrology in the watershed. No attributes are required as the user interaction with the interface will generate all needed values. |
| Reach Profiles | Tabular | Default cross-sectional profiles are used based on the reach contributing area. If specific cross-section data are known they can be entered using the Feature Property Editor. |
| Reach Boundary Conditions | Tabular | If a reach enters or exists the basin, boundary conditions must be set to control the flow into and out of the basin. This can be a tidal boundary condition. Springs can be represented through this data source, or as a point source. |
| Topography | Digital Elevation Model/Raster | This is used to determine the direction and distance runoff will travel from a source cell to the stream network which influences the drainage area of each reach segment. Identifies potential depressional areas and is used to calculate the reach segment bottom elevation controlling the flow between reaches. |
| Weather | Tabular | The following weather parameters are required on monthly average basis: * minimum temperature * maximum temperature * dew point * solar radiation * wind speed |
| Location | Tabular | The mean elevation above sea level, and the approximate latitude. |
| ET and PET | Tabular | The evapotranspiration and potential evapotranspiration. |
| Dataset | Data Type | Brief Description |
|---|---|---|
| Water Control Structures | GIS - Point Feature Class | A point feature class that represents the structure location. WAM can simulate the following types of water control structures: * weir * culvert * flapper culvert * pump * gate A specific tool on the WAM Toolbar is used to enter the location into a scenario and then the structure controls are setup using the Feature Property Editor. |
| Structure Parameters | Tabular | If actual water control structure operational records are known, they can be associated with a structure. |
| Point Sources | GIS - Point Feature Class | Point sources are a specific site from which waste or polluted water is discharged into a water body, the source of which is identified. For example, a point source could represent the discharge location from a Wastewater Utility Zone where temporal discharge records are available. |
| Springshed | GIS - Polygon Feature Class | The Springshed data in WAM is used to override the destination reach that percolation will flow to through groundwater. A springshed will confine percolation leaving a cell to enter a reach within the same springshed as the cell. |
| Rainfall Zones | GIS - Polygon Feature Class | The Rainfall Zones feature class is used to define specific areas to apply a time series of rainfall. This allows the use of NEXRAD rainfall, using either individual NEXRAD cells, or data that has been integrated over a specific area such as a sub-basin or HUC polygon. |
| Flow and Water Quality Monitoring Data | Tabular | This information is necessary to calibrate the model simulation. It is usually in the form of time series data. If formatted properly as a csv file, data can be viewed in WAM in the same graphs as the model output. |
